NH Teen Poet Laureate Team

Updated: May 12, 2023

With Hannah Rubin, NH Teen Poet Laureate and Allison Hawkins, NHSCA

About Us:

The New Hampshire Teen Poets Laureate (NHTPL) Team is a group of high school students passionate about sharing the art of poetry with other NH teens. Among our current projects are a poetry email list for teens (Teen Tidbits) and our online publication Good Poetry. We also hosted a recent poetry reading at D Squared Java in Exeter, NH.

The overall mission of the NHTPL is to advocate for poetry as a valid and valuable method of self-expression. We believe that poetry is an academic discipline, just as serious as subjects like history or science. Poetry is a powerful method of self-expression. Moreover, poetry has the power to cross barriers and bring all kinds of people together. Through the Teen Tidbits, Good Poetry, and our Instagram account, our goal is to reach as many teens as possible and create a NH poetry community for high school students. We want NH youth interested in poetry to know that there are other teens just like themselves out there.

How to Engage:

As of now there are three different positions (multiple people for position) that make up the NHTPL Team. The leaders are the NH Teen Poets Laureate. In the past, there have been two leaders each year. Usually the Teen Poets Laureate have prior experience on the NHTPL team, writing experience, and some level of local/state recognition for their poetry. The Teen Poets Laureate are also typically seniors in high school.

The Poetry Ambassadors may be new or returning team members and represent the region of NH where they attend school. For instance, a high school student who goes to Dover High School could join our team as an Ambassador to the Seacoast Region. Ambassadors are responsible for outreach within their local communities to plan activities such as poetry readings, or possible school visits.

The team members are new to the NHTPL team and do not have to have much prior poetry experience. What we look for in our team members is an interest in poetry and a passion for sharing that interest with others.

The application to join the team is currently open with a deadline of Friday, June 2nd.

We invite any NH-based teens to apply to join our team!
